Newberger Park
Founded by Joseph Newberger in 1929, Newberger Park is a cornerstone of the community and a historic first recreational space for African-Americans in the region. It encompasses the Black Library, dating back to 1939, currently under preservation. The park’s facilities include a basketball court with interactive graphics, a volleyball court, and a playground alongside a purposeful play area that offers empowerment hopscotch and educational games to enhance math and time-telling skills.
A key site on the Black History Trail, the park also features a storm shelter decorated with student-created murals from 2021. Serving as a community gathering space, Newberger Park is a venue for seasonal outdoor movies and various events.
General Young Park
Nestled at the crossroads of Martin Luther King Street and Alice Street, the park stands as a modern homage to a champion of justice and education. Freshly resurfaced, the covered basketball courts beckon athletes of all ages, while the latest playground equipment offers endless fun for children. For a peaceful retreat, a walking path winds through the green space, inviting visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll. Complementing these amenities, a storm shelter adorned with murals, birthed from a 2021 student art project, celebrates the park’s namesake and features a nostalgic Chevrolet homage.
